The 'live photo' look

I took the background out of the image.

Then I found an image of a ceiling to a stage and adjusted the perspective to match.

Then I superimposed the original image on to the background.

Lastly, I added lights and camera flare.

Album Cover

On the contents page of a music magazine a lot of bands have their album covers to promote them in the magazine. So I decided to create an album cover to go on my Contents Page.

I used the same texture that I used for the title of my magazine but with this one I added a rainbow gradient overlay to change the colour.

Next I used the 3D effect to create a sphere. I used an image that was also taken using paint and illuminated by a light.

I placed these over the the background.

Then I put the album title in, bigger than the band name and meshed it into shape.

Lastly I added the band logo.

Texture for Masthead

I started by creating the pattern I wanted by illuminating a test tube filled with water and then taking picture as paint sank through it.

Then I cropped the picture to get the best section of the picture were the paint looked the best.

With this section I accented the edges so that it looked flatter and the lines were bolder.

Then I flipped the image and brightened the section so that the red was brighter.

Lastly I had to select to shape of my text from the section so that it could be placed over the top of the original masthead.

Here is my template with the textured masthead.

Double Page Spread Update

With the images I have below I was able to create a finished Double page spread. I was very pleased with the way the final picture turned out and so instead of covering over their clothing which resembles the kind of music they are, I inserted my other images with the article on the right.
I have stuck to a lot of the generic conventions such as using the band logo font, including a pull quote, an Enkore title in the corner. There is also smaller details like the names of the interviewer/photographer and editor down the side.
However the double page is not quite finished as there are some minor errors that need to be corrected in the article itself and the page number is on the wrong side.

Plan for Double Page Spread

The plan for my double page spread what based on two artifacts from NME and Kerrang. The title was based on a Foo Fighters article from NME which very effective as it was aesthetically appealing to the audience.
I have also decided that I might put in more than one photograph depending on how the main image looks, as it might not need to be reinforced by other photographs.
The article in Kerrang about Biffy Clyro was a great read. As a consumer of the magazine, I throughly enjoyed reading an interview styled article. For me, these are far more real and nothing is censored, it's just the band talking and saying what they want, which leads to a very laid back conversation between the interviewer and the band members.

Front Page update

This is my completed front cover template. After making the adjustments to my Contents Page, I have to change the masthead on my front cover so that the house style continued through the magazine.
For my magazine cover, I wanted to give it a gender diversity so that it would attract audiences of both sexes, so I will attempt to have a balanced amount of men and women on my cover.
For the next stage I will need to insert the final images and also add in some final features that gives the pictures definite meanings, like Free Posters and also text for the main image.

Contents page update

During this session I have focused on completing the main part of my Contents Page. I made a few adjustments which did mean that some changes had to be made on my Front Cover also. Such as the title, it not blends nicely, and matches the colour scheme without looking very 'try-hard' like the smashed effect.
On the contents page it was important to use a variety of images to show diverse articles throughout my magazine. I made a live photograph to show that it's not all about the studio albums, however there is a computer generated image which I have used as the album cover for a band.
I was pleased which how much information I managed to fit on to the bottom half of the page and I think it looks very realistic by comparison to my style models.

Photographs from Recent Concert

I was extremely happy with these photographs that I got from a Biffy Clyro concert. I especially like them because they weren't staged and it what just the band playing their music which would be hard to imitate with models. Being at the front I was able to get photographs that looked like the live photos that are used in Kerrang magazine.

Photo Manipulation

Using Adobe Photoshop a lot can be done with the photos I've taken. For this particular image I wanted to use on my contents page is a plug for the audience to visit the site, or wait until next weeks issue were the story will be expanded on.

So for this image, "Mystery Rock Chicks" I wanted to do a silhouette which showed clearly with the instruments that they are a rock band and also that they are an all woman rock band.

Firstly I took my original images, cropped out the figure and painted it black.
Next I had to make each person look distinctly different, by adding in different hairstyles for each digitally.
I made sure that all my models had tied their hair back so that it would be easier to super impose an edgier hairstyle. Once the hairstyles had been replaced, I meshed them into the right shape and resized them.
Similarly with the figures themselves, using the same technique of meshing so that I could make them distinctly different by changing their body shapes and lengthening legs.

The background has a brown to grey gradient filter so that it wasn't completely black on white.

Finally I added the text, so the photo now has a more evident meaning and the anchorage text in red is smaller to expand on what we already know about them.

Template for Contents page (First Draft)

I shuffled a few of the features around and added to my template so that I can add my photographs in later. I have continued with the same house style and colour scheme using black, white and red. Similarly I used the same texture on the titles as this is one of the generic conventions of a magazine. The page is split into two, so that my main article will take up the first half on it's own while the other articles will be listed below, showing a higher importance to the article that will be on my double page spread.

To create these drafts I referred to three different style models from, Q, NME and Kerrang. I focused mainly on the style from Kerrang as my Music Magazine is aimed at the same audience and therefore need to share some of the features Kerrang use.
